Which Neighborhood is most Walkable?

Now that Leschi has been defined as walkable and a neighborhood where one does not need a car, let's check the data.

First, which of the neighborhoods is most walkable in 98122?
Leschi -- 31st & Yesler... 71 of 100.
Squire Park -- 18th & Yesler... 83 of 100.
Capitol Hill -- 12th & Denny... 95 of 100.
Madrona -- 33rd & Cherry... 62 of 100.

How many residents of 98122 actually walk to work (from city-data.com)?
Means of transportation to work
Drove a car alone: 6,464 (39%)
Carpooled: 1,539 (9%)
Bus or trolley bus: 3,648 (22%)
Streetcar or trolley car: 21 (0%)
Railroad: 4 (0%)
Ferryboat: 10 (0%)
Taxi: 79 (0%)
Motorcycle: 109 (1%)
Bicycle: 477 (3%)
Walked: 3,187 (19%)
Other means: 78 (0%)
Worked at home: 779 (5%)

Number of Households in 98122 -- Roughly 24,000
Number of Households without Vehicles -- Roughly 4,400 (18%)

Let's compare this data back to my original findings that City of Seattle estimates that there are 4K-8K biker commuters. So roughly 10% of those are from 98122.

Disclosure -- my household owns two cars. I take the bus maybe 50%, carpool 30%, drive 15%, Walk/Cab 5%. My commute is 3 miles Leschi to downtown.

I also live in 98122 and scored a 97 on the Walk Score site. I'm only 3 blocks from 12th and Denny, so perhaps it's that I'm closer to Madison that boosted the score. Who knows?

Anyway, the point of my comment: I'm curious how Microsoft's commuter bus will affect the way that people commute in these zip codes. There are plenty of Blue Badges living on the hill (probably more so by Volunteer Park or East Denny Blaine Place) that may partake of the new direct bus service that will start in two weeks. Not quite on topic, but relevant.

Some comment about this inside Microsoft ranks (full disclosure: I work at Microsoft) -- there aren't a lot of stops on the MSFT bus routes in the area so most North/Northeast Cap Hill employees will be better served by the infamous 43/48 to 242/545 hookup.

I left my eastside commute 4 years ago and haven't looked back... but I remember with horror taking the 43 --> Some bus at Montlake/520 to downtown Bellevue. Is there a route map for the MSFT buses that you can point me to?

also wesa... I noticed WalkScore variability from block-to-block... I think being just a bit further away or closer to a certain category, like a grocery store, effects the score a great deal.

John-

Check out this link: http://blog.carlessinseattle.us/2007/09/microsoft-bus-s.html for a map of MS's routes. There are yet to be specific stops announced (that I know of).

Again, hate to be the data freak but you are porting one sample set into another in your post which is a recipe for disaster (aka you say x pct of your neighbors bike to work which leveraged against y total bikers means z pct of total bikers) when your sample sets are likely wildy skewed and biased (rsrch 101). again, you are basing a logical argument on unreliable data (at best) and self serving rhetoric (at worst). this is the bane of the blogosphere, the patent lack of editorial oversight/disregard for fact checking and process which ends up in (esp when the blogger is seemingly credible as your are) assertions without empirical evidence being accepted as truth...but when you are preaching to the choir you cannot expect to be called out. useful? Yes. Truthful? doubt it.

Yes yes yes KW81 totally agree... I'm not trying to publish an article in Journal of Urban Transporation Issues, just making observations and should probably disclaim the hell out of them.

Have yourself a nice glass of Bordeaux and take the edge off ;)
